Carbon Fiber cloth in its raw state is flexible. The carbon fiber cloth is normally applied to a mold of the shape of the final product and then coated with an epoxy that cures hard to utilize the high tensile strength of the carbon fiber in a rigid fashion. This rigid state is how carbon fiber is used in race cars, airplanes, aerospace, high-end bikes, and any application that requires high strength to weight ratio.

What makes the application of this 3K Carbon Fiber 2x2 twill cloth so different is that the final product remains flexible. We have used TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) to impregnate the carbon fiber to provide some very unique qualities to the cloth.

3K CARBON FIBER

Most Carbon Fiber is made from an industrial fiber called polyacrylonitrile fiber. Also known as PAN, this fiber is used to make acrylic fiber, but is also used to make carbon fiber with a pyrolyzing process. The pyrolyzing process heats the fiber to very high temperatures to eliminate everything, but the carbon in the material. At this point, the fibers have a tensile modulus, or measurement of stiffness, of 33 million pounds per square inch. This process has made it so that more fibers can fit into a smaller space, and the benefit is that you can use less material to get the same stiffness.

The strands of carbon fiber form threads that are woven into cloth. The cloth is beautiful and flexible, but it must be coated with something before being used.
